Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the immediate past Minister of Sports, has
congratulated the Nigerian women’s athletics team for winning the
country’s first ever medal, a bronze, in the inaugural IAAF World
Relays.
The Nigerian team came a close third with 3.23.41 seconds behind the
Jamaican team which came second (3:23.26) and the Americans who were
first with 3.21.73 seconds.
The IAAF World Relays is an international track and field sporting
event that will see national teams from around the world competing
exclusively in relay races.
Although Mallam Abdullahi stated that he was impressed with the
performance of the team, he noted that in time Nigeria would
consistently do better and become an athletics powerhouse in the world.
‘’I am happy that we are beginning to see some of the results of the
High Performance System that my team established when I was the
minister.
‘’I am confident that if the structures we left behind are
maintained, there will be great improvements in the performance of our
athletes such that Nigeria will become a world power not only in
athletics but in other sports.’’
